About

Richard Bernstein

Richard Howard Bernstein is a justice of the Michigan Supreme Court and a leading advocate for disability rights. Legally blind since birth due to retinitis pigmentosa, he made history in 2015 as the first blind justice to serve on Michigan’s highest court.

Bernstein graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan and earned his law degree from Northwestern University School of Law. Before his election to the Supreme Court in November 2014, he practiced law at The Sam Bernstein Law Firm, where he focused on public service and disability rights litigation.

His legal work includes landmark cases that strengthened enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act, improving accessibility in public transportation, educational institutions, and other public spaces. On the bench, Justice Bernstein is known for his commitment to fairness, equal access to justice, and protecting the rights of marginalized communities.

Outside the courtroom, Bernstein is an accomplished marathon runner, having completed 27 marathons around the world. He often uses his athletic achievements to challenge stereotypes about disability and to promote inclusion and resilience.

Justice Bernstein’s career reflects perseverance, public service, and a lifelong dedication to justice and accessibility. His work continues to have a lasting impact on the legal system and serves as an inspiration to individuals with disabilities nationwide.
